The authors posit that a flexible, realist approach to international relations will best serve U.S. interests, and that co-opting rising centers of power can “help to ensure that while it no longer enjoys the privileged status of hegemon, America is able to position itself, like the Corleones, as the next best thing: primus inter pares—‘first among equals.’”
