CEPA Salon at the Estonian Embassy

The first CEPA Salon of 2019 was held in cooperation with the Estonian Embassy in Washington, D.C on Thursday, January 31. The discussion featured insights from host H.E. Jonatan Vseviov, Ambassador of Estonia and LTG (Ret.) Ben Hodges on the current security challenges facing the Alliance. The conversation was moderated by CEPA Executive Vice President Réka Szemerkényi.

For the last seven decades, NATO has served as the foundation for Western security. Europe and the United States continue to be each other's strongest allies in today's climate of heightened strategic competition. Estonia's geostrategic position on the Eastern Flank provides a unique perspective on the challenges NATO faces. Instability and conflict in Europe has refocused the Alliance to commitments under Article 5 and the European Union is taking significant steps to support NATO readiness and deterrence. Additionally, disinformation, energy, cyber security, and other emerging threats have opened new fronts of conflict, making it necessary for states and alliances to adapt to a new reality. During the CEPA Salon, Estonian Ambassador Jonatan Vseviov provided his perspective on the state of European security with a view from Tallinn. CEPA's Pershing Chair LTG (Ret.) Ben Hodges addressed the role that the United States plays in maintaining the Alliance's stability.

Each month, the CEPA Salon visits a different European Embassy. These salon-styled discussions offer an opportunity to learn about Europe’s perspectives and challenges through the lens of U.S. legislative and foreign policy priorities. During this informal evening session, participants exchange views and network with leading experts and diplomats.
