Nord Stream 2: Dangers and Options

U.S. Energy Security, Allies, and Alternatives to Putin’s Pipelines

On Thursday, July 26, CEPA hosted an event on the Hill to discuss the negative implications of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project. The discussion featured opening remarks from Representative Dennis Ross and analysis by Margarita Assenova
, Associate Scholar at CEPA. The conversation was moderated by Réka Szemerkényi, Executive Vice President at CEPA.

Right now, the Nord Stream 2 (NS2) pipeline represents one of the single greatest threats to European solidarity and security. Backed by the one of the largest gas suppliers in the world—Russia—this pipeline offers a direct challenge to European law, the principle of fair play in a marketplace, existing regulatory protections for consumers, and the bedrock of America’s political cohesion with its allies in Europe. Transatlantic leaders now face the very real dangers of widespread, long-term energy dependence on Russia if NS2 is completed. Policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic need to consider the geopolitical ramifications of NS2—and how to stop it.

During the event, participants reviewed the groundbreaking report on NS2 published by the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). Featuring insight and analysis from CEPA experts, the discussion highlighted U.S. interests in opposing Russia’s NS2 project, as well as identify the report’s key findings and recommendations for the United States and Europe. The event considered: does Europe need NS2; how does the Kremlin use the energy sphere to spread malign influence; what are the geopolitical implications of NS2’s completion; and how do competing political goals within Europe collide over the future of NS2?
