For the past month we have been witnessing the formal debate and passage of constitutional amendments that will facilitate Vladimir Putin's continued rule under new institutional arrangements.

But as is so often the case in Russia, all this kabuki theater has been something of a Potemkin facade masking the real and hidden battles.

The Kremlin's court politics are heating up and the stakes are high.
